Is Chivalry Dead?

I wonder sometimes if chivalry still exists or it’s completely dead in today’s day and age. Somewhere along the line, I often ask myself, “Where and how do we see chivalry being expressed today?” In our modern life, chivalry is visible in a man’s simple deeds such as generosity, kindness, respect, and reliability. Some describes it as a “gentle man culture” but is there really a gentle man existing in our present social world?

Whenever I ride the bus and no seats are available; men who are sitting would only look at me and stay where they are. Candidly, it doesn’t really upset me, I guess that maybe they see me as a strong woman who can manage such situation. But what upsets me is seeing senior citizens struggling to stay on their feet through an hour long commute while these grown men are comfortably sitting down, listening to their iPods or drinking in each passing seen outside, totally unaware of their environment. I just wish this was the same case with everybody else. Lots of girls end up standing in buses, opening doors, struggling with lots of things in their hands, suffering because some ignorant guy don’t want to offer help.

Don’t think that I’m contemptuous or irreverent towards this topic, I just noticed that most of the men today are more ego-centric, especially when it comes to strangers. Chivalry should come naturally, not applied only when a girl finally clears her throat or when someone says, “Hey is there any gentleman out there?” Some guys claim that girls don’t need it at all, that they can handle things by themselves. Some guys just don’t bother and ignore it completely. In my own opinion, chivalry can be seen on how a guy was brought up and what kind of manners and values he has. That’s why most of the girls say that they want a gentleman when asked about what they look for guys. I know guys will disagree about this topic, they will never believe that chivalry is dead. They will proclaim that they treat girls exactly the way they supposed to be treated. So I guess an old lady or a pregnant woman deserves to stand up in the bus coz that’s what exactly they supposed to be treated? Unbelievable as it may be, but it’s the reality we obviously see every time we turn our heads in society. Whether chivalry is dead or not, we definitely need more of it.
